Jeffrey Powell concedes race for Secretary of State.
Jeffrey Powell: “Respecting the outcome of an election is critical component of a working democracy. Today and over the last few weeks, a quarter million North Dakotans cast ballots for leaders and ideas that will shape our collective experience for the next four years and beyond. It's apparent this election did not break our way.
“I'm sad, but I'm also hopeful. I have met scores of North Dakotans who want a better future for our children, a cleaner political environment and a cleaner environment-environment for those who will follow us, a more transparent government and better tools to watch those who make decisions for us. I will continue to advocate for these things, and more. Though the ideas I would have advanced did not win the day, I know that the thirst for Democratic principles persist amongst us all."
Powell learned of the election results while attending a watch party with friends and other Democratic-NonPartisan League leaders in Grand Forks, including Zac Ista, who won reelection, and other friends and colleagues. Dr. Powell lives in Grand Forks with his wife and two of the couple's children, both college-students. He is employed at Mayville State.
